Earlier this month, Volvo released a prototype of the new 7700 Hybridbuss: a fuel efficient charter bus (aimed primarily at European markets). Hoping to hit the markets by 2010, this diesel combination engine and lithium ion battery reduces carbon emissions by up to 30% and nitrogen oxides by as much as 50% (compared to all-diesel equivalents).

Instead of idling at lights or stops, the engine shuts off; when it restarts, the electric motor quietly accelerates to 25-30 MPH before the diesel kicks in, creating a quieter and cleaner ride for passengers and bystanders. Oh, and did I mention it can carry an additional 7 passengers? This bus is certainly coasting towards a cleaner tomorrow.
